Metamorphosis at the Martineau Gardens

Paul Davis

The Martineau Gardens is a peaceful and tranquil environment, just two miles from the busy heart of Birmingham’s City Centre. The organically maintained gardens provide visitors with an insight to the advantages of healthy eating, demonstrate examples of successful inner city conservation and introduces the benefits gained from therapeutic horticulture. Metamorphosis is far from being just another gardening project. Working alongside the Mental Health Trust, the Wildlife Trust and Education providers the dedicated team at Metamorphosis are working to provide a wide range of services to the local community. The elderly, through suitable gardening projects, receive help to regain their strength and fitness, those recovering from mental illness find support and understanding in stress-free surroundings, while a range of educational activities are planned to teach children and adults from inner city areas about food, wildlife and the effects we have on the environment. Volunteers from all walks of life help maintain the gardens, which include vegetable, herb and formal areas with rare species of trees and shrubs. An orchard, pond and wooded area support a wide cross-section of wild life. Plans for the future include improved teaching facilities, meeting rooms and a conservatory. Co-Enterprise works closely with Metamorphosis, advising on business planning, cash flow forecasting, conditions of employment and employment policies and procedures.
